A mechanic is a professional whose task is to repair and maintain all kinds of vehicles like trucks, buses, cars, auto-rickshaws, etc. One of the important things that they need to know is the working of an internal combustion engine and diesel motors. Some of the factors that they should be aware of are the components of a vehicle and detailed knowledge about dismantling and reassembling them. They have to make their hands dirty and have to solve the problems of their clients.

Now new technologies are being implemented in the vehicles and mechanics need to learn all of them to stay updated so that they can repair the vehicle easily. Mechanics are of different types. Some of them are specialized in different vehicles like trucks, buses, and cars while some are specialized in different brands of cars like Audi, Mercedes, etc. Mechanics work in garages and auto workshops. They can also be found in vehicle rental agencies or as a car dealer.

Responsibilities of a mechanic

A mechanic is responsible for many things. Some of his responsibilities are as follows.

Regular maintenance and status check

The mechanic has to check different types of fluids and their levels. These fluids include coolant, motor oil, and brake oil. He also has to replace them if it is found to be necessary. The next thing he has to check is the filters. Cleaning and lubricating various parts of the engine along with checking the battery and electric systems are also required.

Inspecting and repairing the parts not functioning properly

A mechanic uses special hardware and software to check and diagnose the status of the vehicle and its different parts. He has to check brakes, air pressure in the tires, loose screws and parts of the engine that are not functioning properly. He mends everything to make the vehicle work perfectly.

Replacement of malfunctioning parts

He uses various tools like screwdrivers, wrenches of various types and sizes, pliers, and hydraulic lifts to diagnose the parts were a glitch is believed to have occurred. They also replace them with the new one in case the damages have gone beyond repair. He must have a knowledge about the parts of a particular brand which the vehicle belongs to and make the replacement accordingly. If the engine is malfunctioning, he can cut its chest open to check whether any replacement is needed. He must be capable of reassembling the dismantled parts.

Creating reports

He has to create the report which will include the expenses of the replacements and services are done. During the servicing of the car, he needs to keep track of all the parts that have been replaced or repaired. Another thing that should be included in the report is the request for the parts that are not available in the garage. He also has to explain the client about the bill which will include all these things.

Following safety measures

The mechanic should use proper safety tools and equipment while repairing the vehicles. These tools include safety goggles, suits, gloves, etc. The tools will protect the mechanic from accidents and suffering from an injury. Many times heavy machines like hydraulic lifts and power tools are also used so proper safety equipment should be in place.

Maintaining stock

He has to keep track of the stock of various things that are frequently used for a replacement like screws, spark plugs, batteries, etc.

A mechanic has to do a lot of jobs and he is responsible for many things related to the vehicles. He needs to track the services he has done, parts he has repaired and replaced and present the bill to the customer explaining to him all the elements of cost displayed in the bill. He should also take care of his safety so that accidents during repair can be avoided.
